Inside the IM with Sebastian Davidson & littlemissbluedress
No hard times for Sebastian Davidson, from Japan to Dubai, he just keeps traveling on.
Lisa: This set is great, how many tracks did you go through to make it?
Sebastian: Ta! hmmm I guess about 20?
Lisa: Are these your favourite ones?
Sebastian: Well not in particular order, but they meant something in my career, good memories or great sales etc.
Lisa: There are a few in here I have heard many DJ`s play, like the 2nd track (Sunday Morning).
Sebastian: Yeah that one is quite fresh. The first song (Great Taste Zero Sugar), remixed by Seva K was used by Groove Armada for their mix compilation on Defected. I was jumping in my studio when I read the news 2 years ago.
Lisa: Very cool! I saw the new GU 2010 CD that has a remix of yours, Eelke`s `Luigi`s Magic Mushroom`.
Sebastian: Yeah, I never get copies from GU.
Lisa: Haha that`s shitty, they should give them to you if you have a track on their label. I was in Virgin the other day and randomly picked it up. Was good to see artists on there I know personally ![]()
Sebastian: Hehe of course you know them! We all know you too!
It Starts with the Beats
Lisa: Do you have a routine you go through in making a new track? Like how did you make this one for example, was it on a Sunday morning?
Sebastian: I just start with the beats and then see what happens. Most time I have an idea if it should be more up-tempo or deep as hell. But nothing is guaranteed. Some idea’s turn out into something totally different from what I wanted to make. This track wasn`t made on a Sunday morning, but it`s a very chill down tempo track, perfect for Sundays. I saw myself driving a car during a sunset on Sunday.
Lisa: Yes, it would be perfect for that. This next one, Gaze, has also been very popular.
Sebastian: Yeah, I was very surprised when that got signed to Shur I Kan and Milton Jackson`s label (Dark Energy Recordings). The funny story about this track is that I sampled Milton Jackson – Rhythm Track, but he did not even hear it, he signed it in 10 minutes.
Lisa: Hahah awesome, you mean he didn`t notice that his sample was in the track?
Sebastian: Correct.
Lisa: Hahaha, no wonder he liked the track! Some people find it really hard to come up with track names, how do you choose yours? Like why Gaze?
Sebastian: Haha, well same here… actually the b side of this EP is called Taton. Thats a female TV host in Belgium. I just Google some strange words, I cannot remember how I did found “gaze”. But if I look into my discography there are a lot of titles which have something to do with nature; Gletsjer, Nightbirds, Mountain Areas, Rain, Natural, Cherry Blossom, Bondi. For my album I will choose only titles which have something to do with Planet Earth.
Lisa: That`s great, when are you planning to make an album?
Sebastian: Well I`ve been working on in for 6 months now, but I just deleted 40% of what was ready this morning because I just don`t want to release an album with 10 deep house tracks. I want from down tempo, to more poppy stuff and deep house. The ones I deleted were a bit outdated. I also want to decide what case the CD will be in and artwork etc, maybe something sustainable as all the titles comes from Planet Earth.
The return to Audio Tonic at 360
Lisa: We are very excited to be back at 360 after a month of rain. You are our first international of the New Year; this is your 2nd time right?
Sebastian: Yeah! Last Feb was my first time.
Lisa: That was amazing, I looooooooved your set. I remember trying to go the bathroom, getting halfway downstairs then having to run right back up… skipped the loo break Hahaha.
Sebastian: Thats good to hear!
Lisa: What did you think of the place?
Sebastian: Its amazing, one of the most wicked places to play on earth. The view, sound system, the people, everything just works. I can imagine I could live there for a while and be a resident
Lisa: Do you have an idea of what you want to play for your set on Friday?
Sebastian: Hmmmm not yet really… Planned to check all the new promo stuff tomorrow, but I guess it will be deep, sexy and in the end a bit dirty.
Lisa: Heheh just the way I like it
The Big Tuna
Lisa: Tell me about your recent trip to Japan.
Sebastian: That was amazing! What a county! I played there in JPop Cafe in Shibuya, it was a really nice gig… the city was so overwhelming, lovely people too.
Lisa: What was the crowd like?
Sebastian: Enthusiasts!
Lisa: Haha totally, Japanese are so funny. They get so into it, jumping around like crazy.
Sebastian: They called me Big Tuna, `cause I`m so tall.
Lisa: Hahahaha you must have been a giant to them, even I was taller than most of them. What else did you do there?
Sebastian: The day after I went to party with all the DJ girls and guys from Tokyo, did a surprise back to back set with one of them at Legato and of course I did a lot of sightseeing. I also took the Shinkansen to Kyoto and stayed there for about 3 days.
Lisa: Oh wicked Kyoto is so beautiful and peaceful
Sebastian: Yeah really nice temples and shrines and of course I went to a Karaoke bar, but I can`t sing.
Lisa: No one can, but you drink a lot and no one notices. I love the all-you-can-drink places.
Sebastian: Oh yes I drank a lot! I did some arm wrestling in a bar with a Japanese champion and he lost so he gave me his watch…
Lisa: Hahahaha that`s hilarious.
Sebastian: Yeah so funny he was drunk too.
Good Bye 2009
Lisa: Last year was a challenging year for many people, did you find it to be a difficult year?
Sebastian: Not really, actually it was an amazing year for me… Been playing at many places in the world, had some great selling releases and had the change to meet many nice people.
Lisa: What was your best gig of 09?
Sebastian: Hmmm hard to choose one, but Japan, The Loveland Festival and 360 were amazing… Plenty of good memories.
Hello 2010
Lisa: Did you make any new goals for this year?
Sebastian: First finish my album and then release a two track EP with Eelke Kleijn. I`m also having a track to be released with Karol XVII & MB Valence.
Lisa: Are you producing it together with Eelke?
Sebastian: Yeah we made two tracks we are about to finish
Lisa: Was this your first time producing together?
Sebastian: Yes it was.
Lisa: How did you find it co producing a track?
Sebastian: Its cool when it works, but sometimes hard when you think differently, same as when playing a back to back DJ set.
Lisa: Did you have any differences making the tracks?
Sebastian: Well you both have our own way of working, so we started the ideas together but then finished one each on our own.
Lisa: I imagine it`s like two chefs in the kitchen.
Sebastian: Good example.
