Whats Going Down

btb presents EXPOSED w/ Terry Lee Brown Jr.

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

We’re not sure if this is Terry Lee Brown Jr.’s first appearance in Toronto, but we do know this is a long overdo booking for many of us.

The innovator of deep – and I mean real deep – funky tech house has been dropping bomb tracks in both the studio and in the booth for many, many years now. When the opportunity presented itself to be the first leg of an elusive North American tour featuring the legendary Plastic City artist; we jumped all over the chance.

And truthfully, no better place to host this highlight talent than within the comfortable confines of The Mod Club Theatre. The vibe at the last EXPOSED event with Jody Wisternoff in March was absolutely memorable and we definitely expect the same energy - probably even more - when TLB Jr. steps up to the Mod Club stage.

Have a listen to this typically dope promo from the German house phenom and be sure to join us for bringthebeats’ return to EXPOSED on August 8th. We promise you a club event like no other this summer.

M.A.N.D.Y. | Steve Porter | Booka Shade | Time Festival… EMBRACE is on fire!

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

EMBRACE ENTERTAIMENT
In 2008 we’ve been super fortunate to have the opportunity to support one of, if not the hottest promotion group in the city. Embrace Entertainment is seemingly hosting a mega event every week and they’re only building momentum as the summer rolls on.

Producing events across North America, this crew has a stranglehold on the hipster, new school techno sound, as well as the Porterhouse groove which has been a mainstay in his stable since we first met. We’re on board for four Embrace events in the next month and we can not be more excited about the chance to expose the bringthebeats faithful to cutting edge music and fresh vibes in new venues.

M.A.N.D.Y. - Circa - July 25, 2008Friday July 25, 2008
M.A.N.D.Y. | A.D/D. | Andy Ares | Nitin | Mixhell - Live | Patrick DSP | Joe Rowe | Rex Manning
Circa (126 John Street, Toronto)

The first of these parties is going down on July 25th when M.A.N.D.Y. invades Circa’s Randomland. The German duo blazed The Social earlier this year (our first opportunity to hear them live) and I expect nothing less at the super club Circa.

We’re hosting a list so GET ON IT and definitely check out the live set from the world famous Fabric in London. We had a ton of great feedback about it when we were promoting the Social gig, be sure to grab it now if you didn’t then.

Steve Porter - Footwork - July 26, 2008Saturday July 26, 2008
Steve Porter | Evan G | Aleksandra
Footwork (425 Adelaide Street West)

The very next night Steve Porter returns to Toronto for his second visit to Footwork in 2008. The first party absolutely rocked! Footwork’s Friday night posse ate up the Porterhouse, with the dance floor jumping all night. Anyone who joined us for Luke Fair back in May will contest the club’s Saturday night is awesome as well.

Footwork is definitely the best underground space in the city. Its size, sound and following are very much conducive to the Porterhouse vibe. Again we’re hosting a guest list for this one so GET ON IT. And of course we have some tunes to preview the party… this is vintage Porter.

Booka Shade - Circa - July 31, 2008Thursday July 31, 2008
The Sun and the Neon Light Tour w/ Booka Shade – LIVE
Circa (126 John Street)

Out of all of these events, this one is the one I’m most excited for. Electro and techno are sounds that I’ve often been very critical of, but not at any time have I disliked a Booka Shade promo set. Hearing them live at Circa will be a very special treat.

It’s always amazing to hear a proper live electronic act. I remember Trentemoller at Mod Club last year. It was so incredible to hear someone blazing in concert style, but flowing like you usually only hear from a DJ set. I’ve heard from many reputable sources that Booka Shade are very much at this level. Man I think we’re on the verge of a very cool night… GET ON THE GUEST LIST!

TIME Festival w/ Soulwax | Erol Alkan | A-Trak | Matthew Dear | Heidi | Jokers of the Scene | Mario J | Fritz Helder & The Phantoms | Eli Wilkie | Hatiras | VND/LSM | Nasty Nav | Jonny White | Nitin | Jeff Button | Noah Pred | Evan G
Sunnyside Pavillion - 1100 Lakeshore Blvd. (1pm - 11pm)

Time Festival - Sunnyside Pavilion - August 10, 2008Saving maybe the best for last, Embrace presents the Time Festival. More than any event going down in the city this year, the Time Festival hosts the most styles representative of the direction the underground scene is moving towards right now.

Eclectic techno and house mixed with big room electro will engulf the Sunnyside Pavilion for a day that is shaping up to be the most massive of the summer. It will be an entirely new experience for the bringthebeats crew, as it’s our first time hearing most of the artists and it will also be our first ever trip to Sunnyside for an EDM event.

We have a couple go to guys in Jeff Button and Eli Wilkie, and Heidi really impressed us with her opening set at the Get Physical party in May. We’re also aware of the massive popularity of the headliners Soulwax, A-Track, Erol Alkan and Matthew Dear, but otherwise we’ll be venturing into un-chartered territory at this event. Should be fun times guaranteed.

If you want to join us on August 10th you can do so by sorting some tickets through the Embrace Ticket Centre or you can buy them at Play de Record (357A Yonge St.), Soundscapes (572 College St.) or Rotate This (801 Queen St. W.).

Lisa Sant’s Coming Home to Holosound at Toika!!

Friday, July 4th, 2008

To celebrate littlemissbluedress’ return home to Canada, we’re going to attempt to recreate one of her favorite parties from her time in Japan. Holosound’s Alex Fish will be traveling in from NYC to make his first solo appearance in Toronto and we’re super excited to be hosting him in what we know will become “The Legendary” Toika Lounge.

We don’t need to say much about how absolutely awesome Alex’s gig was in Japan; Lisa covered it all for us in her “Holosound Does Tokyo!” review. And yes it includes musical proof, so if you want a true sneak peak to how great this Far East party was and how amazing the Toronto edition is sure to be, please listen for yourself.

We also must not deprive you of another fantastic Holosound promo. This fusion of tech-house and melodic techno displays a more serious side to the duo’s talent. It’s their versatility that has always impressed us the most and it’s why we think this mix is so incredibly cool as always.

Cruise Control II w/ S.O.S

Friday, June 13th, 2008

SOSJust when you thought summer clubbing couldn’t get any better, Toronto’s boat cruise season fires up again when LIV debuts S.O.S, Desyn Masiello, Demi and Omid 16B to the city this August long weekend.

It will be hard to live up to last year’s inaugural Cruise Control when Demi blew our minds with a funky, chuggy, underground house set on the Northern Spirit. The boat was packed, the sun was seriously shining and Demi treated us to the best day of Summer ’07.

But if there’s power in numbers and any truth to the “more is better” philosophy, S.O.S will triple the bliss of last year’s magical ride. Their Balance 13 tour is in full swing, the three have never been hotter and they’ve developed a brand new style distinct to their solo play.

I know the btb posse has been thirsting for these guys to touch down together in Toronto, so you know the boys will be getting the most from the floor (deck). And if it sounds anything like this set from MOS in May (despite the so-so sound quality), I know Cruise Control II will be the party of the summer once again.

Luke Fair & Nic Fanculli on a Boat | Canada Day

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

We have such a long winter here in Toronto; it doesn’t seem right to spend the entire summer sleeping the day away after spending all night in a dark night club. To remedy this problem and still satisfy our clubbing cravings the boat cruise has become TO’s hot new party style. And no cruise will be bigger this year than the July 1st party featuring Luke Fair and Nic Fanculli.

The first cruise I ever went on was in Miami when Luke played alongside another top international talent with a cutting edge sound, James Zabliela. Luke and JZ tore it up back-to-back, with many not caring if Sasha & Digweed would actually go on they were both so good. Hear for yourself; four years old and sounding fresh like it was made at this past WMC.

A Family Affair w/ Jeff Button | Lily Resto Bar

Monday, May 12th, 2008

There are a ton of wicked parties going on this long weekend. Of course all the major venues are hosting mega, mega events that I’m sure many of you will be hitting up.

However, if you need a pre Circa bash or if you’re looking to let it rip in a more intimate jam, bringthebeats resident Jeff Button will be firing it up at Lily with Kenny Glasgow and his crew.

We’ve been going off about Jeff since we started EXPOSED with him last August and now that he’s back on the free agent trail we expect even greater things from this incredibly solid dude and DJ.

And of course we’ll let the music speak for itself by offering his gorgeous two-part spring promo that showcases his deeper side, a style that is so btb. Enjoy and hope to see you on May 18.

Discoteca presents Luke Fair & Brad Copeland | Footwork

Monday, April 28th, 2008

We’re over the moon excited to be associated with another Luke Fair event in Toronto. With it all going down within the best underground space in the city, and on the birthday weekend of Isabelle Renaud, our old school clubbing friend who will be visiting from Montreal, we couldn’t ask for a more perfect situation to begin our new association with Footwork.

Luke’s newly affiliated digital label, Discoteca Music presents Luke’s first Toronto gig in almost exactly a year and his first Footwork appearance in well over two years.

Discoteca, founded by Sweden’s Dana Bergquist, Scotland’s Tom Morgan, Norway’s balErik and Mexico’s Somnos Corp. is one of the hottest new imprints in the House scene today. With Luke’s involvement, the label is sure to reach new heights, exactly what we’re expecting from the bringthebeats events we’ll host at Footwork.

To top off what is definitely going to be a legendary night, Brad Copeland returns as Luke’s set up man.

It’s no secret that our intention with all btb parties is to reclaim the Breathe at System Soundbar vibe that has had us hooked into this music for almost 10 years. We all know that the Luke and Brad nights were some of the best Breathe had to offer. We can only imagine the madness that will ensue now that these two are back together with skills developed to levels well beyond the System days… I know it’s hard to believe.

To promo the night in proper bringthebeats fashion, Luke has provided a fresh live set from a recent gig at Dana’s residency in Stockholm, Sweden. This two part beauty is just a taste of the perfection we’ll hear when he lays it down for four hours on May 10.

Get Physical Toronto w/ M.A.N.D.Y. & Audiofly | The Social

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Our knowledge of this genre is quite limited but from what we know, Get Physical has produced next level tech-house like no other label in the world.

M.A.N.D.Y.’s music has always blown our mind and it’s incredible the depth of Audiofly’s sound. Its music that in many ways is way over the top for us, or maybe we should say “under the top.” Either way, it’s extremely intriguing at the same time. Hearing this all go down in an intimate space like The Social should be right mad.

Check these two Proton sets, Audiofly’s newest and one of the best we’ve ever heard from M.A.N.D.Y., live from the world’s best club, Fabric, London. After one listen, we’re sure you’ll be IN for this one.

We continue our promotions help with Embrace Entertainment by shouting out on a wicked party going down on Saturday April 26th at Wrongbar.

The big bad Dirty Bird Claude Von Stroke will be headlining alongside San Fran’s Worthy and Nasty Nav.

It’s going to be wicked night of bumpy tech and breakbeats like only the Dirty Bird crew can deliver. Plus, we’re pumped to finally check out Wrongbar and the crazy ass sound system that we’ve heard so much about.

Check out the CVS Essential Mix that we were raving about in our 2007 review and be sure to hit up this kick ass event.

EXPOSED: Fridays at The Mod Club Theatre

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

EXPOSED | house.music.re-evolution

That’s how you launch a night! A huge thank you to everyone who made it out to EXPOSED’s Grand Opening. The event was a huge success, as the place was hopping all evening and the vibe was unlike anything we’ve been within over the past several months.

Addy rocked it out for his beloved following and his fans energized the place in return. Neno also set the tone perfectly. Plus, The Mod Club proved to be the ideal backdrop, as expected.

Unfortunately the night didn’t go off without its fair share of hiccups, and we apologize to anyone who was negatively affected by the initial delay getting things started or with any other issue incurred throughout the event. We as a team see several ways in which we can improve the night, and truthfully, that’s just as exciting as the opening party itself.

Again, thanks to everyone who supporting the EXPOSED Grand Opening and we look forward to providing a proper end of the week release every Friday; one the Toronto underground most definitely deserves.

house.music.re-evolution

After months of preparation EXPOSED has finally launched! On Friday August 17th the official Grand Opening for EXPOSED at The Mod Club Theatre went down and completely off as expected!

For us it’s been since the early days of Breathe at System Soundbar. For others it’s been since the beginning with Industry or maybe the legendary 270 Spadina space and Boa-Redux. Regardless of wherever or whenever, for all of us, it’s been way to long that a Toronto club night be truly dedicated to the underground.

LIV Lifestyle Marketing, Energie Entertainment, NocturnalMagazine.net & Till The AM and bringthebeats have joined forces to put together a weekly event that’s not just about booking the big names… over and over and over again. EXPOSED is about bringing it - the music - back to the forefront once again.

EXPOSED hosts four distinct events each month. Four Fridays focused on pushing the boundaries and providing the fresh names in House music centre stage in a major market.

bringthebeats books the first event each month, presenting a Funky Progressive House sound that has been unjustly lacking within the Toronto club scene. The night will highlight talent from the sensational Feedback Bookings roster (… stay tuned), as well as many of the wicked DJs that have supported btb over the years. This most definitely includes our first two bookings, NYC’s Alex Fish & Noah Becker (Holosound) on August 24th and Edmonton’s Luke Morrison on September 7th.

Brad Copeland makes his long awaited return to a Toronto residency as the top jock for all bringthebeats’ bookings. Brad has been a number one at three of Canada’s all-time top underground venues: Stereo in Montreal, Atomic in Ottawa and System Soundbar in Toronto. We are extremely proud to have such an accomplished artist share the booth with our new and exciting guests.

Warming the room will be one of the city’s newest hot commodities, Jeff Button. All summer Jeff’s been rocking Sunset Sessions at The Docks’ ‘The Next Level’ with deep, sexy and soulful Progressive House. He’ll definitely ride this momentum into some memorable opening slots for EXPOSED.

EXPOSED Grand Opening feat. DJ AddyEnergie Entertainment is known for putting on some of the most stylish events in the city, showcasing some of Toronto’s most popular DJs. They have the biggest of them all lined up for the second Friday of each month.

For all who like to bang it out and bang it hard, the legendary DJ Addy is back in the saddle. Spinning with him is his own hand picked resident DJ Neno. Neno has been working with Addy for years and knows exactly how his crew likes to warm it up and cool it down.

The cornerstone of EXPOSED, LIV Lifestyle Marketing will be supporting the Tribal and Classic House sounds that fueled the Sonic, Boa-Redux and now Sunset Sessions faithful. Expect many appearances from within the world-renown Stereo Productions roster including Richie Santana in September. Addy will return as resident for these nights.
The mighty NocturnalMagazine.net & Till The AM round out EXPOSED each month
showcasing an array of Soulful Vocal House to Dirty Tech & Electro. Armed with residents Andy Reid and Simon Jain and with EDIT Bookings securing their guests, this crew is poised to make a major impact throughout the Toronto scene. Their first booking - the UK’s James Talk on August 31st – is a perfect example of the up front talent this team is supporting.

How great is EXPOSED’s venue? It’s so nice to be out of the congested downtown core of the Entertainment District and into the more mature, fashionable area of College St West. And of course… the space is built for music!

Host to one of the city’s longest running and most successful weekly events - ‘The World Famous’ The Mod Club Saturdays - as well as a rocking live-to-air on Thursdays - The Mod Club has been begging for a solid EDM night for Fridays. With proper VIP areas, a massive hardwood dance floor, front and centre DJ booth, spectacular visuals, big room audio, slick décor and overall sexy-and-sophisticated vibe, EXPOSED could not have found a better home.

www.EXPOSEDmusic.com is the place for everything EXPOSED, including event listings, guestlist, party pics, resident info, promo and live set downloads and much, much more. The site’s blog style will keep you informed on events to come and those that have already gone off! News and features on performing DJs will be available, as well as multiple ways to give us feedback. EXPOSED knows the opinions from the dance floor are The Most Important.

Join us at the underground’s next great venue every Friday night and party with the city’s hottest residents and emerging international guests. EXPOSED invites you to the The Mod Club Theatre and the re-evolution of House music in Toronto!

In Demand: Isaac S

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

When I look back at all the places I have traveled I’m always reminded that Toronto has one of the best scenes in the world for electronic dance music. The T.O. scene is kept alive because of people who are passionate about the music, including DJs like Isaac S, who is continuing to champion a solid, steady Progressive House sound with this latest In Demand exclusive.

Isaac S - In DemandI first heard of Isaac S six years ago when I was attending the University of Waterloo. During that time I worked at a restaurant beside the Revolution nightclub, where Isaac held a five year residency. During my late-night breaks I would sneak out to the venue’s House space, the Purple Room to catch some of Isaac’s high energy sets.

Since that time Isaac has kept himself very busy both as a DJ and in the production side of EDM. DJing Isaac has spun at many of Toronto’s most well know and beloved clubs such as System Soundbar, Roxy Blu, Element, The Docks and the Guverment. He’s also been booked for some of the city’s most high profiled one-offs including the world renowned Fashion Cares benefit.

On the production side, Isaac has released several tracks and remixes both internationally and domestically and has recently established his own label, “Dirty Deluxe Records” with his new production partner Jeff Hurst aka J-Groove. His production is such high quality he’s had tracks featured on John Digweed’s Kiss 100 UK based radio show.

Isaac started DJing during the early Toronto rave scene when he was 18 and now 13 years later I think it’s safe to say Isaac is a veteran! Within seconds I knew this exclusive In Demand mix was going to be a great one. Right from the intro beat I wanted to clap my hands… you`ll hear what I mean. So turn up the volume because what you’re about to hear is full of chunky build ups and killer vocal tracks; it definitely has a big club feel!

Carrying on with the In Demand tradition I survived a Japanese typhoon to sit on my porch and find a wireless connection so that Isaac and I could have a chat. What came out of it is really very entertaining…
