If you love the funkier, groovier, sexier styles of The Rogue Show Podcast €“ Episodes 001 & 002, then its best you mark August 7th on your calendar right now because this epic night of incredible vibes will ultimately make up the tunes for Episode 003. Arriving early will provide a very special treat as we’re reuniting Luke with his old Solution crew when Fabricated’s Steve Mack & Matt Coleridge open with a very special back to back set. INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND v9 featuring SHUR-I-KAN & irGO

We’re doing everything we can to keep the Toronto scene fresh, funky, INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND. In this spirit we bring to you our first full partnership in the I&U series on Friday June 11th when House Addict presents Volume 9 with one of the industry’s hottest producers / DJs, the UK’s Shur-i-kan.

Tom Szirtes aka Shur-I-kan, is considered amongst the top of a new wave of electronic producers thanks to his trademark blend of musicality and cutting edge production techniques. He has been a long-standing key artist for Jimpster’s Freerange Records, and has recently collaborated with Glasgow’s kingpin of house, Milton Jackson, to start Dark Energy Recordings. Representing the deeper side of house, Shur-I-kan will show Toronto his true self for the very first time.

As mentioned, this is our first co-promotion for the INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND series. We definitely couldn’t have chosen a cooler direction than with the House Addict crew’s love for deep, sexy tech house. We know both crowds will appreciate the vibe this sound provides and we couldn’t think of a better venue than Toika to host this soon to be legendary Toronto debut.

There is NO GUEST LIST for this event. Please hook up advance tickets at the extremely low price of $12 at www.gettickets.ca. Cover at the door will be $20 so save yourself a drink at the bar and grab your tickets now.

For pre-party beats leading up to the big event, subscribe to Shur-i-kan’s Dark Energy Podcast on either iTunes or libsyn. Also subscribe to irGO’s Podcast on either iTunes or PodOmatic.

Underground Redemption

Just when I thought it might be winding down, the passion I feel for the underground seems to fire up again. See, I’m approaching a crossroads, a point in my life where I need to begin to focus all of my energies on only the important things in my professional life. Now I just need to figure out what it is that’s important in my professional life.

I’ve come to grips, many times, that EDM is not where I see myself in 5-10-20 years. I’ve always said that it’s too unprofessional, too random an industry to spend the rest of my life trying to make a difference and earn an honest, secure living. But really, is EDM any different from the corporate world I find myself in now? Truly, no matter the profession, isn’t the secret to professional success about choosing to work with people you respect in an environment that’s inspiring?

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND is a great example of getting the most out of the choices we make (Check our pics from I&U v8). We’ve stayed true to the underground essence, embraced it for what it is and have never tried to make it anything more than what it should be. And by doing so, we’re creating unforgettable memories each time we fill the dance floor.

Now we’re well aware the true tests are yet to come. Will we be able to recreate the electricity of our gigs headlined by Luke & Ricky with lesser known, up and coming artists? That’s always been our primary focus and in the end, our success will be measured on how many people come to bringthebeats / INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND events, not just for any one particular DJ.

And will we be able to properly launch The LocALe and finally become a recognizable group within the Toronto club circuit? As mentioned in the promo piece for v1, our long term success throwing events and introducing new talent to this city will be implicitly tied to our ability to attract local support from others working behind the scenes.

Over the next few months these questions will definitely be answered and the results will be one of the deciding factors in whether or not we should take bringthebeats to a full time level.

Saying all this, it’s the global effort that still excites me the most. How can it not coming off such an incredible Winter Music Conference in Miami (Check our pics Part 1 & Part 2). Damn was the music ever incredible and once again we met an abundance of like-minded, equally motivated colleagues.

Our friends from Embrace have definitely become a power house at the WMC, but it’s the detail, vision and enthusiasm of the Listed crew that has once again impressed me the most. They work so bloody hard and it shows in the quality of the music, production and most of all, the people on the dance floor.

Yes, the conference is starting to look quite a bit like a Jersey Shore pilgrimage, but that also means more of the mainstream is taking notice. We all most likely entered this scene with a style that we’re not as much interested in today. Let’s hope these people similarly convert to a less party focused participation and help the continue growth of the more underground sounds we believe should be at the forefront of this industry.

All in all, things are more positive for our movement than they’ve been in a long time. Looking back to my last IMO over 18 months ago, I think bringthebeats and the underground have taken more steps forward than in reverse, a tone I was definitely not writing in back in the fall of 2008.

It remains to be seen how the rest of the year will unfold, but whatever happens, one thing is for certain, 2010 is shaping up to be an all or nothing year for bringthebeats. Is it time to follow a dream or is it time to move on? Only time will tell; but the last few weeks has me looking more towards the stars now than ever before.

The LocALe w/ Brad Copeland, Sean Crawford & Jenn Hetherington

Share

The LocALe v1 w/ Brad Copeland, Sean Crawford & Jenn Hetheringtonbringthebeats has always been more of a global movement than a local one. Glancing over this year’s web stats, only about 13% of our visitors live in Canada. The way we see it, promoters around here focus more on partying than music, so the regular club kids of Toronto don’t take much notice of our ‘music first’ philosophies.

Don`t get me wrong, we have an incredible core in our crew. Unfortunately our crew hasn`t grown that much over the years. To some extent that’s our own fault for not embracing local talent more than we have… we`ll defer other’s faults for a future IMO post.

If we’re ever going to truly make it in Toronto’s club land, we have to establish successful partnerships with other promoters, which means supporting more local DJs. Joint ventures with irGO for INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND is the first step, our new party series The LocALe is the next.

On Friday April 23rd at Toika we host our first local event in years; The LocALe will feature two of our best mates in the scene with Brad Copeland and Sean Crawford providing the peak time tunage. It’s going to be an amazing blast from the past to have these two guys in a bringthebeats booth once again.

And in a very special appearance we have Jennifer Hetherington making her btb DJ debut in celebration of her 30th birthday… again (hehe). Nobody brings a better vibe to the dance floor than our homegirl Jenn. Her energy is infectious and unrelenting; her support of what we do has always been very much appreciated. We can’t wait to finally hear her rock it out… this time, in front of the dance floor.

We hope this event will help foster an even more communal vibe at bringthebeats parties, leading to more FREE local based events at Toika. That’s right; The LocALe will be a free party series! Our Fabricated friends have proven there’s a thirst for a low key, non pretentious circuit of home grown jams; hopefully we can help quench that thirst on April 23rd.

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND v8 featuring LUKE FAIR & irGO

Share

Finally the 2010 INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND season has arrived. We have big plans for our events at Toika this year and it all begins on Friday March 19th when we take full advantage of Winter Music Conference travel by booking one of our top supported talents, Luke Fair.

We couldn’t let a trip to this side of the pond pass us by, so we’ve brought in Luke for our third consecutive booking right before he heads to the WMC. With how he ended last season’s INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND and the magic of New Year’s Eve, Luke has a lot to live up to at the eighth version of our growing series. We know he’s absolutely up to the challenge and we look forward to letting lose with everyone who can’t make it to Miami and of course, getting it started with those who are.

This opening event also marks the introduction of a true HouseAddict to the bringthebeats crew. irGo is one of the most respected figures in the Toronto club scene and we are thrilled to have him warm the Toika dance floor with his deep tech and tribal house sounds. Luke is incredibly excited to have irGO spinning alongside as he returns to his hometown for another night of super funky fun.

As always there is NO GUEST LIST for this event. Advance Tickets are available at www.gettickets.ca for the extremely reasonable price of $12.00. They are limited so please be sure to get yours now, cover at the door will be $20.00.

For pre-party beats leading up to the big event, please become a Luke Fair fan on Facebook and subscribe to irGO’s Podcast on either iTunes or PodOmatic.

bringthebeats NEW YEAR’S EVE

Share

I don’t think we’ve ever been prouder of our crew for putting on a party. The entire team went all hands on deck to get this one off the ground, and boy did we ever deliver. We’ve had a lot of memorable events over the years, but it’s tough to think of one that was as special as this was.

It’s always been a dream of ours to throw a New Year’s Eve bash, but it’s most definitely not an easy event to pull off. Not only are you in competition with every entertainment establishment in existence, but you’re also going up against the house party night of year. Add the fact many regular clubbers don’t want to deal with all the rookies infesting the streets, dance floors, restaurants, clubs, bars, cabs, coat checks, bathrooms, etc., etc… and you’re up against the world with the last / first promotion of the year.

Specific to small shops like ourselves, we’ve never had access to an artist that could draw a crowd on this night of nights. You really have to go with your ‘can’t miss’ talent if you’re going to be successful on New Year’s Eve. Every year we throw out feelers to our favs, and every year it’s the same old story; “Sorry bro, but I’m making big money on that night. But let’s set something up in the New Year.” Yeah right, when we’re knee deep in snow within -20 temperatures… sure we’ll talk.

New Year’s Eve really is the last ‘for sure’ night to throw a party in the Toronto winter. Like I said, it’s always only been just a dream for us; but this year, our dream finally became a reality. And I’ll also say this again, I couldn’t be prouder of how we all came together and created a night we’ll all always remember despite the many, many factors we were going up against to make it happen.

This review is all about thanks. Thanks to everyone who helped promote the party. Thanks to all who helped the night of the party. Thanks to Carey Britt and the Sound Academy for providing us the incredible Liberation Lounge and the fantastic staff that made the entire night soooo perfect. Thanks to Jason Warth for traveling from Chicago and taking such wicked pics. Thanks to the promoter in Hungary that canceled Luke’s gig and a huge thanks to Mr. Luke Fair for taking a chance on us after they did. And most of all, thanks to every single person that stepped on the dance floor and shared their incredible vibes and infectious energy from the first track to the last.

It was a night we’ll never forget. A night where we left it all on the dance floor, as Luke gave us everything he had in the booth. A night we’ll leave for the amazing people in attendance and not for the internet masses to wish they were there. Sometimes the perfect chemistry of a DJ and the fans just can’t be recreated; this was one of those nights.

It’s a night I will always hold dear in my heart; a night where we once again proved that it’s not just “all about the music”, but sharing it with the right people counts as well.   No bells, no whistles, just the tunes of our time and the people who love them as much as we do.

Please, check out our pics, as well as a more artistic view from Jason’s incredible eye.

bringthebeats NEW YEAR’S EVE featuring LUKE FAIR

It’s always been a dream of ours to host a New Year’s Eve party in Toronto. However travel costs are always at their peak, and all of our favourite DJs can make mass money in large venues; we can never compete for bookings with our preferred, more intimate soirés.

However one crew’s loss is finally our gain. An unfortunate cancellation for Luke Fair in Hungary has made him available to help us ring in the new decade here in his home town for the very first time. Of course we’ve jumped all over this extremely rare opportunity.

A huge thank you to Carey Britt and all the crew at Sound Academy for making The Liberation Lounge available for bringthebeats’ first ever New Year’s Eve event. For those who’ve never been in the room before, The Liberation Lounge has the same cozy feel as Toika, but with a more wide open concept. We know we’ll be able to achieve the same tight vibe we do with the INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND’s in this space.

Only 100 tickets are available in advance for $30 at www.gettickets.ca. This is pretty much the most inexpensive ticket in town, with by far the most established DJ in the city this NYE. No bells or whistles here folks, just the best House music on the planet from Toronto’s all time #1 talent€¦ LUKE FAIR ALL NIGHT LONG!!

Visit Austral Mixing to download Luke’s most recent promo, a serious house groove from start to finish. Definitely check out the pics and music from INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND v7, an absolutely magical night all around.  And finally…

Ricky Ryan – bringthebeats album [Aenaria Chill]

We’ve always left the production world to the big publications and have done our best to cater to the dance floor warriors of the scene. But there are exceptions to every rule, especially when you have an entire digital album dedicated to your cause.

We are overwhelmingly proud to present the bringthebeats album from Ricky Ryan on Luca Ricci’s Aenaria Chill. Ten tracks inspired by our deep progressive roots, Ricky has dug deep into his soul for this truly global release.

Each selection was contrived during Ricky’s spring / summer production tour in Europe and Asia, alongside some of the most revered artists in electronic music today. A passion project in the purest sense, Ricky has brought all of his vast talent to light with this album.

Thank you, Ricky, for this incredible honour. We’ll let you, the expert aka magician, tell everyone about it.

When I listen to music I see colours. I will share with you those colours I see for every song and mention the influences, inspirations (such as Brazilian blondas) and all the wonder collabs!”

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND v7 featuring LUKE FAIR & Diana

Share

It’s crazy to think we’ve been in this promotions mess for seven years now, and ironically enough we’ve also reached I&U v7. Both are accomplishments we’re extremely proud of but can not take full credit for. So many have contributed to our success, which is nothing more than some good times on the dance floor.

Most of all we need to give thanks to all of the phenomenal DJs we’ve hosted over the years, and none more than Luke Fair. Luke’s been there from the very beginning; if wasn’t for his support, we would have never made it this far. So as thanks to Luke, we’ve brought him back from his new home in Macedonia to help celebrate our Lucky Number 7 at Toika.

Diana on the Decks

We’ve sorted a very special opening act for this I&U. Diana Livits has been a dear friend and a Deep House connoisseur for all of our time in the underground.  It’s going to be great to have such an amazing person, with super cool musical taste to open the night for us. Expect some fresh tunes from our Lady Diana coming soon…they’ll deserve an entire piece on their own.

Thanks to everyone who has ever contributed to, or even just experienced the bringthebeats vibe one time. If it wasn’t for all of you the past seven years wouldn’t have been the best we’ve ever had. Times are sometimes tough doing this promoting thing, but two things that have never let us down are the music and the bringthebeats crew. That is what we’ll be celebrating on October 23rd.

There is no guest list for this party, but advance tickets are available at www.gettickets.ca for an extremely reasonable price of $12 each. Door cover will be $20 and we max out at 120 partiers, so please, buy advanced.

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND – Belgian edition

Share

Ricky Ryan’s Mob Festival world tour is in full swing. In the last month alone he’s been in Barcelona, Lisbon, Ibiza and Mallorca. He’s currently back in Tel Aviv working on more productions and then Ricky will be off to a very special event for the bringthebeats faithful in Izegem, Belgium.

Ricky’s always supported our vibe and vision through the many mixes he’s dedicated to our bringthebeats and EXPOSED movements, and with the btb endorsements he shares with all the music lovers he encounters throughout his travels. One such group is the Cube crew out of Begium who have gone as far as to adopt the INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND philosophy for their upcoming boat party featuring a headline set from btb’s #1 son himself.

It’s super exciting and flattering that a promotion so far from our home will be implementing our concept into their own vibe. We wish Cole and Ken Dust, the two awesome talents that will be spinning alongside, only the best of luck with this party. Please if you’re in area, get to that dock early on the 26th, we promise an amazing time with Ricky on board. And be sure to check out these two Belgian superstars, I’m certain they’ll put on an incredible show in their own right.

Cole (www.djcole.be)
Cole is on a quest to make good music, and play good music. He checks the crowd, checks his record bags and picks what fits the occasion. Belgium’s prime clubs are no unknown ground, since he played at Decadance, Petrol Club, Culture Club, Fuse and more, but also at Belgian festivals such as Laundry Day, Pukemarock, Rock Werchter Stella Stage, and festivals abroad in Italy and France. And last but not least, he’s also the youngest member of Galaxie Gangbang Soundsystem, a collective of DJ’s supported by Discobar Galaxie, who have their own spot on the Rock Werchter Festival each year.

Ken Dust (www.djkendust.com)
Ken Dust plays a hybrid style of electronic music like electro house, tech house, and progressive house, depending on the concept, or the vibe of the audience. Ken has always been very passionate about music, but the end of 2008 was a major breakthrough, since he was selected by Young Talent Corner (Poppunt) to play on New Year’s Eve at the famous concept Beats of Love, organized by Kozzmozz in the Vooruit in Ghent, to share the decks with big international artists. A few months later, Ken was invited to play at the concept Thursdayz, at Noxx Antwerp.

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND v6… when Fridays are awesome

Share

It always begins with a sluggish Monday morning. The vertex of my unrest and underlying discontent. I spend my weekdays in a constant state of confusion, plugged into the hive. I resign to my cubicle at work. And pace myself with promises of breaking free at the end of the week. I share this feeling with all youth born into a ruptured world, where what we want is often overshadowed by what we’re told we should want and do.

Come the glorious awaited weekend, and I know that I’ve been out and about enough that the patina of Big-DJ-Big-Club nights has worn off for me. I want to have something different please. Call it an electronic meditation, a worm in my head, or just a fresh party philosophy. I want off the beaten track.

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND events at Toika are my pursuit of a special musical experience. Where the typical sounds resonating through my city are drowned by an emerging, persistent counterculture. On August 2, btb delivered the sixth in the I&U series, the much anticipated return of the DJ that crystallized the I&U vibe and began a movement.

Ricky Ryan is this guy from Argentina, with longish black hair and incredible cheekbones. He is a DJ, a music man, and a key part of my curriculum in the progressive house music experience. At I&U v6, Ricky created an ambience on the dance floor that had every foot tapping, spinning and sliding; a fitting and much-needed follow-up to v5.

Once again, the btb crew set out to prove that we understand what our friends are looking for, and this is reflected in the essentials of our nouveau nites. From the perfect EQ on the mixer, the headliner talent, to the trend-setting “btb fans” – our goal is to be entrenched in all the ingredients that make memorable everlasting experiences. We’ve been transmitting these signals for seven years now, can you hear us?

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND v6 featuring RICKY RYAN

Share

Nine months ago we began the INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND series to promote our favourite artists in an environment which felt like home. Five events later we’ve established the night as one of the freshest parties in the city. Worldwide people are raving about the vibe created by the btb crew and the music that’s been let out by the phenomenal talents we’ve booked so far.

Ricky Ryan was the perfect guest to kick off the series, as he’s always been like a brother to us; supporting our movement with his promo mixes and performing in any sandwich shop, concert hall or kitchen we’d ever asked him to spin in. It was an extremely proud moment to put together the party that we did last October, because finally we gave Ricky the true underground experience we’d always been striving for.

On August 2nd we’re bringing Ricky back to Toika, a new and improved Toika, for another very special open-to-close set in support of his Mob Festival CD which is now on sale across South America. I can’t wait to hear Ricky in the upgraded space and feel the vibe that is sure to be enhanced with the club’s new layout. Ricky is by far our marquee international guest, this is sure to be our best I&U yet.

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND v5… lessons learned

Share

Well I guess you win some, and you win and lose some. We only book people we respect and connect with, so never will a btb booking be a total bust. But this one was definitely not our best, filled with a lot of lessons learned and make-up moments galore.

Straight up, Dory is amazing! She met the lukewarm Toika dance floor head on with some dope tech house and had all the hardcores hot steppin’ and super impressed. The btb crew wasn’t in full effect, but those who were in support had a great time for sure.

However, for reasons that continue to plague our truly underground events, Dory never really had a chance. Every time we book someone that isn’t established in this market, and we feel that we might need the support of a local, it comes back to bite us in the butt.

Jade is seemingly a nice person, and she played some pretty cool tunes, but unfortunately she was virtually stranded by her No.19 crew, a group  we were really counting on to show some love for Dory and the tech house sound. We had this gig planned for nearly four months in advance, but even that couldn’t ensure Jade’s fans wouldn’t be spread out across the city, all weekend, as they always are.

To make matters worse, our crowd isn’t interested in hearing a DJ that plays multiple times in the city week in and week out; and our gigs just aren’t intriguing enough for the regular club circuit without a big “name” on the bill. You gotta spend big, and in my opinion book boring, to be able to draw a crowd in this city.

In retrospect we should have asked Dory to go open to close and went for it on our own. At least that way people show more patience during the early hours of the party, knowing that the headliner is already in control. With Jade opening, people walked in and saw the cold, barren dance floor and decided to bail out to another club while they could still make list and avoid the peak time lines.

If you’re going local, you must go all local and if you’re bringing in a guest, you have to give them the utmost respect by handing them entire night to do whatever they please. Through our experience, for our parties, this is what works best. A lesson learned.

The weekend wasn’t a total disappointment. We created some amazing musical memories with Dory and special guest Naveen G. Club 1000 was in the fullest of effects, and for the first time ever, we’re releasing some beats from a btb after party. Check them out here.

INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND v5 featuring DORY & Jade

This one really has been a long time in the making. Dory and I have been trying to work something out since the WMC ’07, but without any real tech-house roots for bringthebeats, it’s been difficult trying to sort out the proper party for Dory’s Canadian debut. That was until we met Jade this past December.

We’ve seen Frances Zibulski out and about in the Toronto scene for some time now. It’s tough not to notice her and her super slick friends ripping it up on the dance floor. But when I realized she DJed and noticed her starting to get gigs with the No.19 crew (Kenny Glasgow, Jonny White, etc.), I became extremely intrigued by the prospect of Jade spinning alongside Dory at Toika for our first ever tech-styled INTIMATE & UNDERGROUND.

Frances stopped by our Boxing Day after party and after sitting on the sidelines for a bit, she decided to head to her car and slip her promo into rotation for the Club 1000 crazies. Admittedly we were all a bit sceptical about what we were to hear; as everyone knows we’re a pretty “jaded” collective when it comes to techno talent. But we were all pleasantly surprised to hear a deep, groovy promo that was most certainly techno, but definitely not soulless like we had feared and have heard way too much of over the past couple years.

It took a lot of guts to throw in those beats for group of hardcore progressive house heads that had just ingested a half a day’s worth of Luke Fair. For me it sealed the deal on the Dory gig as we finally had someone within the genre to spin alongside; do it well and with incredible enthusiasm. Dory and Jade is a match made in tech-house heaven.
