On October 4, 2012, bringthebeats is officially 10-years old!
I can hardly believe it. It’s absolutely surreal to think we’ve been around that long. What we do here has definitely become a huge part of who I am; and I like to believe, who we are. It’s been a truly remarkable ride up till now.
But for the sake of the entire crew, I wish I could say every minute of the past decade was great. Unfortunately, it’s not always been that way. I seem magnetically drawn to drama, but in my defense, it’s always been in an attempt to make people dance.
Let’s face it; we’re not spending all this energy on a scene that’ll make us rich. On the contrary, if you dig through the archives, you’ll see we’ve done everything we can to protect the niche. We’re not promoting the flavor of the month and we’re not hosting mixes that’ll attract thousands (though one day they will… mark these words).
We’re growing this movement progressively, with music we love passionately, and by default, the creators who we believe in unequivocally. We have a plan and we’re sticking to it. Just like the best nights on the dance floor, our project is on a slow, steady build toward popularity. It’s a business for us; but we’re not it for the money. bringthebeats is in business of good vibes.
If we can ever make it happen on a larger scale, then some cash is inevitably going to make it in our pocket. But if everything stays the same, at the very least, we’ll have these special times stored in the network to be remembered forever. You can’t place a value on that.
What bringthebeats has lacked (and has probably always held us back) is a dedicated resident. We’ve needed somebody who’s not only in this to be a DJ, but someone who sincerely respects the power of music. A talented dude opening the room will bring us credibility. When he rocks rooms, that’ll put us on the path to making some money.
It took us ten years, but we finally found that guy; someone to pave the way for bringthebeats in Toronto and beyond. Cesar Caballero has been around the block and it’s led him to our dance floor. Our voice in the local club (and soon enough around the globe) is coming from the Groove Garden and man does it ever sound cool.
The magic moment where our momentum will most certainly pick up is on October 13th when Cesar performs alongside the man who represents the past, present and future of what we do. Whether we’re tag teaming on the GU board or working together to move people on the dance floor, Ricky Ryan has always been on our side.
He’s a producer in the booth and a DJ in the studio. Few have this electronic music thing figured out like Ricky. This deep, melodic birthday gift confirms, it was an absolute must he be here for our 10-year anniversary.
HUGE thanks to everyone who’s honoured us with their support since 2002. Sooo much appreciation goes to all who’ve hooked us up with beats, and those who’ve dug them as much as we have. The most love goes to Adriana for allowing this to go on as long as it has, and for her advice in the good times and the bad.
Once again, WHAT’S GOING DOWN IN OUR UNDERGROUND is about to get really, really good, and I’m super proud to say, we always knew it would.
