Everything but the Obvious from Naveen G & Niall Kirk

By barney :: Sunday, May 24th, 2009

With so much cookie cutter music on the airwaves, it’s a huge relief to come across something unique.

Compilations that challenge the listener and provide introspection are too few in this new commercialized world of EDM. But as you’ll hear below, mixes that have distinct intrigue still do exist and man am I ever grateful these true artists spoil us with such treats.

Naveen G has always been an individual that isn’t afraid to be an individual. He’s always shied away from the obvious hits. Whether it’s his Darker Shades or new side project, The Retrofuture Disco, Naveen has never been afraid to leap right outside the box.

Best described by Naveen himself, “leftfield cosmic tunes, moroder style synth jams, freestyle and dreamwave all spread out over 2 CD length mixes,” this is some mega cool stuff.

I should probably kill myself for making such an obvious reference to a DJ from Ireland, especially when the post is all about the opposite. However, Nial Kirk is honestly my assigned leprechaun who periodically pops up with incredible treasures, always right out of the freaking blue.

I’ve been sitting on this Space Camp mix, waiting for the perfect material to launch alongside. I knew the time had come when the Retrofuture Disco sets landed in my inbox.

Just as distinctive, just as daring, this comp cherry picks from the entire universe of melodic sound. From rock to folk, from funk to pop, this is house music twisted in ways you’ve never dreamed of.
