Mike Haddad & Royce Haven – Way Out There – Proton Radio

Take it from a guy who’s struggled to find flight shares for years, there are not nearly enough North American promoters supporting truly underground sounds. Yes, the EDM scene has grown in this continent year after year; however, as this scene is reaching the mainstream, it’s also feeling much more ‘mainstream’, which isn’t so great for a jaded progressive house head like me.
In my good ole clubbing days, the music was as driving as the way too popular electro crap of today. But it was also crisp, eclectic and it always had direction (never an obvious one). My fondest examples of this quality progressive were the Stereo sets of Sander Kleinenberg in the early 2000’s.
Before Sander succumbed to commercial pop pressures, he was blazing the best club in the world bi-monthly with a brand of progressive house that is rarely heard anymore. It was rough and raw, but also very melodic and sooooo dance floor friendly. It had been a long time since I’d heard anything like these sets, but then came along this one from Mike Haddad and Royce Haven.
This duo from DC has been making quite a name for themselves with their Witty Tunes label and their solid promo sets. I was personally first introduced to them in the summer of last year when Gabriel Sordo was sorting his Toronto gig at Toika alongside a Washington appearance that Mike had set up for him the day after.
Of course I was over the moon excited to hear that another North American crew was supporting such a wicked underground talent like Gabriel; but I was additionally pumped to hear the music Mike and Royce were producing and mixing.
The mix below revisit’s the party vibe of my prime; and go figure, it was hosted on Jody Wisternoff’s Proton Radio show. This guy will always support the music I love most.
